The 2023 PELLA Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley remains true to Kristof’s style of richness, elegance, complexity, and balance.
The exemplary, long, cool 2023 growing season was all about vineyard balancing and canopy management for us. Kristof dropped 1/3 of our grapes early on for optimal ripening and flavor development. October had us stripping leaves by hand in the vineyard with its cool, marine influence, to open space for airflow and sun exposure on foggy mornings, resulting in beautifully balanced grapes with richly developed flavors, generous acidity, and firm tannins.
The grapes for our 2023 PELLA come from two, tiny, one-acre vineyard plots in Napa Valley’s Oak Knoll District AVA, one hillside, and one on the Valley floor. Kristof meticulously hand-farms the grapes without the use of pesticides or herbicides (too small to certify organic) and made just 60 cases of wine.
The first sip of wine imparts dark, rich, yet sleek, brambly fruit flavors like mulberry, as well as pomegranate and plum skin, with an upward lift from acidity. There are energy and freshness from petrichor and green flavors like green tea and fig leaf that expand on the palate with great length.
Tannins gently assert themselves, along with a finish of sweet, dark, resinous wood like sandalwood and flavors of ultra-dark chocolate, espresso and clove. The pleasing tension in the wine comes from the balance between rich, powerful flavors and a lean, muscular physique with energetic movement. Drink now, allowing the wine ample time to open, or cellar for 20+ years. This is one for your library.
Only 60 cases. Kristof farmed the vineyard by hand without using herbicides or pesticides. 100% Oak Knoll District AVA, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. 100% locally-coopered French Oak.
750 ml. ALC 14.8%.
“This wine is my ultimate expression of terroir, a word conjured up to describe the indescribable alchemy of growing grapes for fermentation into wine to enrich our individual experiences of life. Named for our daughter Pella, we have invested all the fruits of our labor into this bottle of wine.” - KNA
