I don’t think there are better plates for celebrations, especially holding slices of birthday cake, than these. They seem magical and are almost impossible to photograph in the bright sunlight, as they dazzle the eye and lens with an iridescence that comes from within.

The technique for creating stretch glass was invented in the early 20th century and involves adding metallic oxides and salts to molten glass to create iridescence; as the glass is reheated and pulled or molded, a unique “onion skin” texture appears.

Rare set of six (6) antique, iridescent blue, stretch glass plates, measuring 7 1/4” and weighing a solid 10.5 oz each. There are no stamps or markings, and I’m not an expert, so I won’t hazard a guess as to the manufacturer.

Each plate is slightly different, some with marked gold edging, others without. In very good condition, though lovingly used. Also good for garden fairy tea parties.
