Porcelain Consomme Bowls by RK Richard Klemm Dresden

Porcelain Consomme Bowls by RK Richard Klemm Dresden
Rare set of six 19th century, quatrefoil (shaped like a flower with four petals), dual-handled, porcelain bowls with delicate floral and gold detailing. I’m no expert, but I’m calling them consomme bowls, as opposed to finger bowls, because I can’t imagine a man dipping his fingers into these small, eggshell thin bowls to rinse them in hot lemon water. Tipping back a shot of broth? Sure.
Just thing for serving cold soups like gazpacho, for ice cream, or simply as exquisite pieces of decoration. Bowls and matching saucers are in excellent condition.
I think every Wine Country estate should have a stash of Meissen, Sevres, Limoges, or (in this case) Dresden porcelain lining its kitchen shelves. Where did I get this idea?
Back in the 1990’s, Napa was dead quiet. There was no youth culture, despite the fact that a group of us young people in our twenties who loved wine worked in the industry. We knew X back then but moved in different circles; not that there were many circles to move in. But we lived in a dingy apartment, while he lived on his family’s vineyard estate.
If you were a regular sort of person and tried to keep up with people like X who had trust funds and dined at Tra Vigne weekly, you’d end up in serious credit card debt. We kept our noses to the grindstone.
One day, we reached out to X because we were looking for seasonal housing for winery interns from South Africa. He had a lot of unused rooms, right? Turns out he was happy to rent a couple.
One day we checked in on the interns to see how they were doing. “It’s lovely here,” a beautiful South African woman told me. “X lets us use the pool and the kitchen,” she said, as she sliced a baguette. “But not this mother’s Limoges.” She gestured to a cabinet of paper-thin, gold-rimmed dessert plates. That a twenty-something man would guard his mother’s porcelain stuck with me as an interesting detail.
